n8n is a tool you run. Flomation is a product you use.
n8n is built for the person building the workflow, and rewards knowing how to code. Flomation assumes the people who benefit are colleagues who will never open the editor: they get a form, a message asking them to approve something, or an agent they can talk to. That difference decides which one fits your team more than any feature does.
n8n is the stronger choice for developers who want to write code in nodes and build on a large community. Flomation is the stronger choice when the people using the automation are not the people who built it.
At a glance
Both are node-based and both can be run on your own hardware, so those are not the interesting rows.
| Flomation | n8n | |
|---|---|---|
| Forms | A form builder with pages, conditional questions, file uploads, payment, translation into thirteen languages, and an embed SDK that renders natively in your own site. | A form trigger for straightforward input collection. |
| Human approvals | A step that suspends the run, asks named people on Slack or Telegram or by link, enforces first-answer-wins, and handles the timeout. | Assembled from a wait and a webhook. |
| AI agents | Agents that hold a conversation across Slack, Telegram and email, keep memory per person, link identities across channels, and call your flows as tools. | Strong AI and agent nodes inside workflows. |
| Writing code | Script steps where needed, but the intent is typed inputs and dropdowns. | Excellent. Code nodes in JavaScript and Python are a core part of how you build. |
| Getting started | Sign up and build. Nothing to install, patch or keep running. | Self-host and operate it, or take their cloud offering. |
| Teams and access | Organisations, teams, per-flow access and roles, with environments as a first-class concept. | Available in the paid and enterprise tiers. |
| What's included | All 3,585 actions and AI nodes on every plan, billed by execution time. | Self-hosting is free to run; the hosted plans are billed by execution. |
| Community | Younger and smaller. | Large, active, with a substantial library of community-contributed nodes. |

Where the two part company
Both will run a workflow perfectly well. These are the reasons a team picks one over the other.
Who the automation is for
n8n rewards the builder: code nodes, a big community library, and the freedom to do anything if you are willing to write it. Flomation optimises for everybody else in the building. If the person who benefits from an automation is a colleague in finance or operations, what matters is whether they get a decent form and a clear approval request, not how expressive the code node is.
Forms as a product, not a trigger
Collecting input from real people is most of what internal automation does. Flomation forms have pages, questions that appear only when relevant, uploads, payment, a language switcher and an SDK that renders them inside your own site rather than in an iframe. That is a different thing from a trigger that accepts a few fields.
Nothing to operate
Our default is the hosted platform: you sign up and build, and there is no instance to patch, back up, upgrade or wake up to. Self-hosting is there if you need it, but it is a deployment option rather than the price of entry.
When n8n is the better choice
n8n is a strong product and this is a genuine choice, not a formality.
- You want to write JavaScript or Python inside your workflows, and you find typed inputs and dropdowns constraining.
- You want the largest automation community and the node library that comes with it. Theirs is far bigger than ours.
- You are a developer automating your own work, and nobody outside the team will ever touch it.
- You want to read and modify the source of the tool itself as part of how you use it.
- Your team already runs n8n happily, in which case the migration cost is the argument against moving, and it is a good one.
If you do move
These two are close enough that a move is usually about the surrounding product rather than the workflows.
- 01Nodes map to nodes. The mental model transfers almost completely, which is the easy part.
- 02Code nodes are the friction. Some become configured actions, some stay as script steps, and a few are genuinely simpler in n8n.
- 03Credentials become environment secrets, and the same flow runs against test or live by changing the environment.
- 04The parts worth moving first are the ones with a person in them, because that is where you stop maintaining plumbing you wrote yourself.
Other comparisons
Same approach, different product. Each one says where the other tool wins.
The comparison worth running
Take a workflow of yours that asks somebody for something and waits for an answer. Build it both ways and see which one you would rather own in six months.
